The Architecture of the Church of Saint Sergius of Radonezh in Midrand

The picturesque silhouette of the Orthodox Church of Saint Sergius of Radonezh stands in a prime location in Midrand, where it is visible from the N1 highway, crossing South Africa. His Eminence Cyrill, the Metropolitan of Smolensk and Kaliningrad and His Eminence Seraphim, the Metropolitan of Johannesburg and Pretoria consecrated it on 2 March 2003.

Sunday school

The church of St. Sergius of Radonezh opened their Sunday school at the start of the Great Lent in 2005. The aims of the school are as follows: – the education of the children in Russian Orthodox traditions and their familiarisation with masterpieces of Russian literature, art and music, the preservation of the Russian language and the provision of an harmonious upbringing. Parents of children attending the school include citizens of Russia, Ukraine, Bulgaria and South Africa.

The following subjects are taught at the school: Orthodox Fundamentals, Choral singing, Art and the Mother tongue. The subjects are taught by expert teachers in an informal home environment. With great success, the learners of the school perform various Christmas and Easter concerts and take part in the organisation of various feasts, displays and other matters.

The Orthodox Study group

One of the paramount tasks of the St. Sergius parish is its catechism among adult parishioners. Catechism as a phenomenon of Church life is inherent in each parish, but in South Africa the working conditions in this regard differ substantially from the Russian reality. Specifically, not only the lack of access to Orthodox publications, (with the exception of internet resources), radio stations, television channels and the limited amount of available Orthodox literature, but also the degree of perception by the parishioners themselves as a part of their daily existence.
