St.Sergius of Radonezh

Saint Sergius, Hiegumen of Radonezh and Wonderworker of all Russia

Saint Sergius, the founder of the Holy Trinity Lavra, was born of wealthy Rostov boyars on May 3, 1314. On the fortieth day the child was baptised with the name of Bartholomew. From early childhood he grew accustomed to solitude and sought his salvation through prayer, fasting and good works. In 1337, at the age of 23, after the death of his parents, he decided to move to the desert together with his elder brother Stephen. The brothers chose to found their hermitage in a clearing surrounded by thick forest on a low hill, which was later called Makovets. They built a cell and a small church for themselves, which they dedicated to the Holy Trinity. This was the birth of the monastery, which later served as a source of pride and inspiration to the people of Russia.

The life of a hermit is very difficult and requires a good deal of perseverance and will. Stephen could not take the rigours of winter and the scarcity of food. He preferred life in an urban monastery and left Bartholomew for Moscow.

General information about The Holy Trinity - Saint Sergius Lavra

The Holy Trinity - Saint Sergius Lavra was established in honour of The Holy Trinity by St. Sergius of Radonezh.

Two brothers, Stephan and Bartholomew, built a cell and a small church in the name of the Holy Trinity in Radonezh forest and began their lives as hermits. However, Stephan couldn’t cope with this hermit existence for long and went to Moscow, leaving Bartholomew alone. Left alone, Bartholomew took monastic vows, which were bestowed on him by Hiegumen Mitrofan, who came to his call. When he became a monk, Bartholomew was 23 years old. Remaining in complete solitude, Saint Sergius stayed in the desert two to four years. Towards the end of this time, praise for him spread amongst the surrounding residents; people were inspired under his guidance, and his monastery – the famous Holy Trinity - Saint Sergius Lavra, was founded from the settlement which formed around him. In a short while, the Saint had a following of twelve people, and when, one after the other the twelve cells were built, the Saint enclosed them with a fence. In 1344 after the death of Hiegumen Mitrofan, St Sergius became the head of the monastery.
